#regional: Boil Water Notice Holds for Central Auckland Suburbs Amid E. coli Scare
A precautionary boil water notice remains in place across parts of Hillsborough, Mt Roskill, Royal Oak and Three Kings as authorities continue testing following the detection of E. coli in a routine sample.
The alert applies only to specific properties within two defined zones, with officials stressing that not all streets in the suburbs are affected and that water outside the mapped areas remains safe to drink.
Watercare says extensive follow-up testing has so far returned reassuring results, with eight new samples taken داخل the affected zone and 13 from neighbouring areas all showing no presence of E. coli. Early investigations suggest the initial detection may have been linked to a faulty sample tap, which has since been replaced.
Further testing is now underway, with results expected on the morning of April 8. If those results come back clear, the boil water notice is expected to be lifted.
The notice remains in place as a standard public health precaution, implemented in consultation with national water regulator Taumata Arowai.
Officials acknowledge the disruption caused to households and businesses but say the targeted nature of Auckland’s water network has helped contain the issue to a limited area, with no risk to the wider supply.
Residents and businesses within the affected zones are being advised to continue boiling tap water or using bottled water for drinking, brushing teeth, preparing food, making ice and washing dishes. Boiling water once in a kettle is sufficient to make it safe for use.
To support those unable to boil water, Watercare has set up 24-hour tanker stations at Big King Reserve on Duke Street and Hillsborough Park carpark on Carlton Street, with an additional tanker servicing a nearby retirement village. Residents are urged to bring clean containers to collect water.
An update is expected once the latest test results are available, with further information and maps of the affected areas accessible on the Watercare website.
