#hakinakina: SHARKS BITE BACK: WARRIORS FALL SHORT IN CRONULLA SHOWDOWN
The New Zealand Warriors have suffered a setback in their NRL campaign, falling 36–22 to the Cronulla Sharks in a high-scoring clash in Sydney.
Hoping to bounce back after their previous loss, the Warriors started with intent but were quickly put under pressure by a fast-finishing Sharks side that capitalised on key moments to take control of the game.
Cronulla surged ahead early, with a dominant first half laying the platform for victory. By halftime, the Sharks had built a commanding 24–10 lead, exposing gaps in the Warriors’ defence and maintaining relentless attacking pressure.
The Warriors showed resilience, with winger Dallin Watene-Zelezniak producing a standout performance, crossing for three tries to keep his side in the contest.
However, the Sharks’ depth and execution proved decisive. Multiple try scorers, including William Kennedy who bagged an early double, ensured the home side maintained control throughout the second half, extending their advantage when it mattered most.
Despite a relatively even share of possession, the Warriors were unable to convert opportunities into enough points, while defensive lapses allowed Cronulla to capitalise and pull away.
The result halts the Warriors’ momentum after a strong start to the season, where they had built early confidence with a series of wins. The loss also highlights ongoing challenges in consistency, particularly against well-drilled Australian opposition.
For Cronulla, the victory provides a timely boost, reinforcing their competitiveness in the early rounds of the 2026 NRL season.
As the competition heats up, the Warriors will now look to regroup quickly, with the focus turning to tightening defence and maintaining composure under pressure as they aim to stay in contention on the ladder.
