#regional: STORM ALERT: HEAVY RAIN AND DAMAGING WINDS SET TO BATTER UPPER NORTH ISLAND
A powerful weather system is bearing down on the upper North Island, with forecasters warning of heavy rain, strong winds and the risk of flooding across several regions.
MetService has issued a series of severe weather warnings, including red and orange alerts, as the system approaches. Northland is expected to bear the brunt, with rainfall totals potentially reaching more than 300mm in some areas, alongside the threat of thunderstorms and rapidly rising rivers.
Auckland and surrounding regions are also in the firing line, with strong wind warnings in place and gusts forecast to reach up to 120km/h in exposed areas. The combination of intense rain and high winds is expected to create hazardous conditions, including surface flooding, slips, fallen trees and possible power outages.
Authorities are urging residents to prepare for disruption, warning that travel could become dangerous and that coastal conditions may deteriorate with large waves and potential erosion along exposed shorelines. Communities are being advised to secure loose items, avoid unnecessary travel and stay up to date with official warnings.
The latest alerts come amid heightened sensitivity following a series of severe weather events earlier this year, which caused widespread flooding, landslides and loss of life across parts of the North Island.
Emergency management teams are closely monitoring the situation, with the possibility of further warning upgrades if conditions intensify. Officials say the next 24 to 48 hours will be critical as the system moves across the country.
With already saturated ground in some areas, the risk of rapid flooding and infrastructure disruption remains high, raising concerns about the potential for significant impacts if the storm system stalls or strengthens.
