#crime: Investigation Exposes Dark Web Drug Operation Across Aotearoa
A major police investigation has uncovered the scale and sophistication of a drug importation and distribution network operating through the dark web, highlighting how organised crime is adapting to digital platforms.
The operation, led by the National Organised Crime Group, ran for several months and focused on a syndicate using anonymous online marketplaces, encrypted messaging and cryptocurrency to move drugs into and around the country.
Authorities say the group was importing a range of illicit substances, including methamphetamine, cocaine, MDMA and ketamine, from overseas suppliers in Europe, the United Kingdom and the United States.
The investigation culminated in coordinated raids across Auckland and Hamilton, with police executing multiple search warrants, making 11 arrests and seizing significant quantities of drugs, cash and firearms.
More than $500,000 in cash was recovered, along with three firearms, including a 3D-printed weapon, underscoring the scale and risk associated with the operation.
Officials say the network relied heavily on technology to conceal its activities, using encrypted communications and digital currencies to obscure identities and financial transactions. Despite those efforts, investigators were able to track and disrupt the operation through coordinated intelligence gathering and enforcement.
The investigation also involved close cooperation with international partners, including customs and law enforcement agencies in Australia, Europe and the United States. More than 200 kilograms of drugs destined for the network were intercepted offshore before reaching New Zealand.
Police say the case demonstrates that criminal activity on the dark web is not beyond reach, with growing capability to detect and dismantle networks operating in hidden online environments.
Those arrested are facing a range of serious charges, including importing and supplying controlled drugs, unlawful possession of firearms and participating in an organised criminal group.
Authorities say the operation has significantly disrupted a network that posed a major risk to communities across the motu, while signalling an ongoing focus on targeting organised crime exploiting digital platforms.
