#regional: Motatapu gives back: thousands raised for local communities
One of Aotearoa’s biggest off-road sporting events is continuing to give back, with more than $20,000 donated to community groups following this year’s Motatapu event.
Organisers say the 2026 Motatapu, held in March across the high country between Wānaka and Arrowtown, has delivered a significant boost to local charities and initiatives, driven largely by competitor support and entry contributions.
The event, which attracts thousands of runners, walkers and riders each year, has become a major fixture on the national sporting calendar, combining endurance racing with community impact.
A large share of the funding has gone to long-standing charity partner the Queenstown Trails Trust, supporting the maintenance and development of the region’s extensive trail network.
Additional donations have been spread across a range of local organisations, including environmental groups, youth programmes and community initiatives, helping fund conservation work, track upgrades and opportunities for rangatahi.
Organisers say the contribution reflects the strong connection between the event and the surrounding communities, with participants playing a direct role in giving back to the landscapes they traverse.
The Motatapu event has built a reputation not just for its challenging terrain and scenic routes, but also for its commitment to supporting the region that hosts it.
With thousands taking part each year, the collective impact continues to grow, reinforcing the idea that large-scale events can deliver lasting benefits beyond the finish line.
Planning is already underway for next year’s event, with organisers aiming to build on both participation and community contributions as the Motatapu legacy continues.
