#regional: Duck run sparks nationwide call for homes
An animal rescue charity is calling on New Zealanders to step up, as a major duck rehoming effort gets underway.
HUHA Animal Sanctuary is preparing for another large-scale duck run, with dozens of rescued ducks needing safe, long-term homes across the country.
The organisation says it regularly takes in ducks from overwhelmed situations, bringing them into care to recover before finding suitable rural environments where they can thrive.
The latest push is part of that ongoing work, with the charity now urgently seeking properties that can offer access to water, space and a safe environment for the birds.
HUHA has a long history of rescuing and rehoming animals of all kinds, including large numbers of ducks, with past efforts seeing hundreds relocated into new homes after rescue operations.
The sanctuary says ducks require specific conditions, including ponds or waterways, highlighting the need for carefully matched homes rather than urban backyards.
The call also reflects growing pressure on animal rescue groups, with increasing numbers of animals needing care and rehoming across Aotearoa.
HUHA, a nationwide no-kill animal shelter, works with communities to rescue, rehabilitate and rehome animals, relying heavily on public support to continue its work.
The duck run initiative is expected to draw on that same community spirit, with organisers hoping New Zealanders will come forward to provide safe spaces for the birds.
The message is simple – with the right homes, the rescued ducks can be given a second chance to live safely and naturally in suitable environments.
