#kapahaka: Severe weather casts doubt over Taitokerau regionals
Uncertainty is growing over whether upcoming Taitokerau regional events will go ahead, as severe weather warnings impact the upper North Island.
Deputy chair of the Waitangi Cultural Committee, Ropata Diamond, says organisers are closely monitoring conditions as a red heavy rain warning remains in place across parts of Te Tai Tokerau. The warning signals a significant weather event, with risks to safety becoming a key concern for those planning to attend or participate.
MetService has warned of intense downpours, flooding and slips, with some areas expecting very high rainfall rates and dangerous river conditions. Travel disruption is also likely, with roads potentially becoming impassable and communities at risk of being isolated.
Diamond says those conditions could have a direct impact on whether the regionals can safely proceed, particularly for kapa haka groups and whānau travelling long distances. Safety remains the priority, with organisers weighing the risks of holding large gatherings during a severe weather event.
There are concerns that strong winds, heavy rain and possible road closures could prevent teams from reaching the venue, while also affecting accommodation, logistics and the wellbeing of performers and supporters.
With the weather system expected to bring prolonged and heavy rainfall across Northland, organisers are expected to make a final call closer to the event, depending on how conditions develop.
For now, communities across Te Tai Tokerau are being urged to stay updated on weather warnings and prioritise safety, as uncertainty remains over whether the regionals will be able to go ahead as planned.
