#education: Te Toi Mahana Strengthens Governance with Appointment of Experienced Iwi Leader
Te Toi Mahana has appointed respected iwi and community leader George Reedy to its Board as an independent Trustee, marking a significant step as the organisation moves into a new phase of growth and housing delivery.
The appointment brings extensive governance and executive experience to the Wellington-based community housing provider, which is positioning itself to scale up its impact across Pōneke.
Reedy has held senior leadership roles across iwi, community, and commercial sectors. Most recently, he served as Chief Executive of Te Rūnanganui o Ngāti Porou from 2021 to 2025, following his tenure as Chief Executive of Te Taiwhenua o Heretaunga from 2014 to 2021. His governance experience includes directorships across a number of organisations, including Ngāti Pāhauwera Development Company and Hawke’s Bay Water Services, as well as previously serving as Chair of Pēke Waihanga, the Artificial Limb Service.
His background also extends into the private sector, with executive roles across multiple companies and experience as a co-owner of Actrix, now part of Voyager ISP.
Te Toi Mahana Chair Matthew Harker says the appointment strengthens the organisation’s governance capability at a critical point in its development, highlighting Reedy’s ability to operate across iwi, community, and commercial environments, alongside a strong record of delivery.
Reedy says he is motivated by the organisation’s kaupapa and values, and is looking forward to contributing to its work supporting communities in Wellington.
The appointment comes as Te Toi Mahana begins construction on its first new housing development since becoming a registered Community Housing Provider in 2023. The initial project will deliver 23 new homes for whānau in Wellington, forming the foundation of a broader ambition to deliver 500 affordable homes over the next decade.
Chief Executive Jonathan Manns says the organisation is transitioning from its establishment phase into one focused on growth and expansion, with Reedy’s experience seen as critical to supporting that shift. His background in iwi leadership, combined with commercial and delivery expertise, is expected to support the acceleration of housing projects and the expansion of services.
Te Toi Mahana is currently the largest residential landlord in Wellington, providing housing to nearly 3,000 people. The organisation’s focus is on delivering safe, warm, and affordable homes, with a strong emphasis on supporting whānau and strengthening communities.
The addition of Reedy to the Board signals a continued commitment to building capability at governance level as Te Toi Mahana scales its operations and responds to growing demand for affordable housing in the capital.
