#REGIONAL | Rotorua Library rolls out free digital support to bridge community divide
Rotorua Library is stepping up to meet growing demand for digital skills, launching a 12-week programme offering free, drop-in support to help locals navigate an increasingly technology-driven world.
Delivered in partnership with Digi Coaches, the initiative is now underway at Te Aka Mauri, with trained coaches available Monday to Friday between 10am and 2pm. The service provides one-on-one, hands-on guidance across a wide range of everyday digital needs, from using smartphones and tablets to managing emails, accessing online services and exploring emerging tools such as artificial intelligence.
The programme is designed to remove barriers to access, with no appointments required. Residents can simply walk in and receive personalised support tailored to their level of experience, whether they are beginners or looking to build on existing skills.
Alongside practical digital assistance, the initiative is also introducing virtual reality experiences, giving participants the opportunity to explore different work environments and career pathways through immersive technology. The VR component is expected to appeal to both younger users and those considering new employment directions.
Library staff say the demand for digital support continues to grow, with more people relying on online platforms for essential services, communication and information. The programme is seen as a natural extension of the library’s role as a community hub, helping to ensure that no one is excluded as services and opportunities move increasingly into digital spaces.
The initiative also serves as a pathway for jobseekers, with Digi Coaches gaining valuable work experience as part of a broader employment programme supported by the Ministry of Social Development. The programme is delivered through the Digital Inclusion Alliance Aotearoa in collaboration with local libraries and community organisations.
By combining community support with workforce development, the initiative aims to strengthen digital capability across Rotorua while also creating meaningful employment opportunities.
For many in the community, the programme offers a practical and accessible way to build confidence with technology, whether it is setting up a device, navigating online systems, or exploring new tools for work and learning.
As digital access becomes increasingly essential to everyday life, Rotorua Library’s latest initiative reflects a growing focus on inclusion, ensuring all members of the community have the skills and support needed to participate fully in a connected world.
