#hakinakina: Black Ferns Sevens stun Australia to claim New York title
The Black Ferns Sevens have produced a dramatic comeback victory over Australia to win the New York Sevens final, reinforcing their dominance on the world stage and continuing a remarkable season for the New Zealand side.
New Zealand trailed their trans-Tasman rivals 21-5 with just over four minutes remaining in the final but mounted a stunning late surge, scoring three tries in quick succession to secure a narrow 22–21 victory.
The comeback capped off another impressive campaign for the Black Ferns Sevens, who had already confirmed the overall World Rugby Sevens Series title earlier in the tournament after progressing to the semi-finals in New York.
The final was the sixth meeting between the two sides in a championship match this season, highlighting the intense rivalry between the two dominant teams in the women’s sevens circuit. The victory in New York marked the fifth tournament title of the season for the Black Ferns Sevens.
New Zealand had entered the finals day in strong form after topping their pool with three wins and advancing through the knockout rounds. Their consistent performances across the season had already put them out of reach on the overall series standings.
The dramatic win in New York underlines the depth and resilience of the Black Ferns Sevens squad, who continue to set the benchmark in the global women’s game.
For New Zealand supporters, the comeback victory over Australia adds another chapter to a season that has further cemented the team’s status as one of the most successful sides in international rugby sevens.
