#regional: Porirua Reaffirms Commitment to Tamariki and Rangatahi
Porirua City Council is reinforcing its commitment to putting tamariki and rangatahi at the centre of decision-making, with a new report highlighting the city’s ongoing focus on the wellbeing and opportunities of its younger population.
The report presented to the council’s Te Puna Kōrero Committee outlines how local government planning and investment continue to prioritise children and young people across the city. The approach reflects Porirua’s long-standing strategy of ensuring that policies, programmes and public spaces support the needs and aspirations of younger residents.
In Porirua, people under the age of 25 make up a significant proportion of the population, accounting for roughly a third of residents. Council leaders say recognising the role of tamariki and rangatahi in shaping the future of the city is essential when planning infrastructure, services and community initiatives.
The strategy guiding this work focuses on several key areas including creating safe and healthy neighbourhoods, improving opportunities for education and employment, strengthening connections with whānau and community, and ensuring young people have a voice in local decision-making.
Council programmes also aim to provide positive spaces and experiences for young people, including access to recreation facilities, cultural and sporting activities, youth events and opportunities for civic participation. Initiatives such as youth grants, school transport support and careers events are designed to help rangatahi build confidence and develop pathways for the future.
Officials say ongoing engagement with young people remains a key part of the process. Surveys, workshops and community discussions have been used to gather input from hundreds of local tamariki and rangatahi about what matters most to them in their city, including safe public spaces, access to outdoor areas and strong support for physical and mental wellbeing.
The council says continuing to prioritise the voices and needs of young people will help ensure Porirua remains a place where future generations can thrive and feel connected to the community they call home.
