Forty-nine new police officers have graduated from the Royal New Zealand Police College in Porirua, joining the frontline as part of the latest intake to bolster policing across the country.
The group marched out in March after completing their training programme, which prepares recruits for operational policing roles including community engagement, responding to incidents and supporting crime prevention initiatives.
Following graduation, the new constables will be deployed to districts throughout Aotearoa where they will begin their careers working alongside experienced officers in local communities. The deployment of new recruits forms part of ongoing efforts by Police to strengthen frontline presence and maintain public safety.
Training at the Royal New Zealand Police College covers a range of policing skills including investigation techniques, conflict resolution, community engagement and physical readiness. Recruits are also introduced to the legal framework governing policing and the responsibilities officers carry when working with the public.
The graduation ceremony marks the culmination of months of preparation, with family, friends and police staff attending to acknowledge the achievement of the new officers before they take up duties around the country.
Police say each graduating wing represents an important addition to the organisation’s workforce as demand for policing services continues to grow. The new officers will now begin their first assignments under supervision as they transition from training into operational roles within their respective districts.
The graduation comes as Police continue recruiting nationwide, encouraging New Zealanders from diverse backgrounds to consider careers in policing in order to better reflect the communities officers serve.
