#economy: Northland Inc Delivers Strong Return for Regional Shareholders
A new report shows regional economic development agency Northland Inc has delivered a significant return on investment for its council shareholders, with analysis indicating a 180 percent return on the funding provided to support its work across Te Tai Tokerau.
The independent evaluation assessed the impact of projects and initiatives supported by Northland Inc over recent years, examining how public investment has translated into economic growth and development across the region. The report concluded that for every dollar invested by its shareholder councils, the organisation generated an estimated $1.80 in economic return.
Northland Inc is a council-controlled organisation owned by the Far North District Council, Kaipara District Council, Whangārei District Council and the Northland Regional Council. Its role is to drive economic development by supporting business growth, attracting investment, and strengthening key industries throughout the region.
The evaluation found that the organisation’s programmes have helped unlock investment, support local businesses, and contribute to job creation across sectors including tourism, primary industries, innovation and regional infrastructure.
Key areas of work highlighted in the report include business support programmes, investment attraction initiatives and partnerships with iwi, industry and central government to develop new economic opportunities for the region.
Northland Inc also works alongside Māori businesses and organisations to support economic development initiatives that strengthen regional prosperity and improve outcomes for communities across Te Tai Tokerau.
Regional leaders say the results demonstrate the value of coordinated economic development activity, particularly in regions that face infrastructure challenges, workforce shortages and lower investment levels compared with larger urban centres.
The organisation says the findings reinforce the importance of continued collaboration between councils, iwi, businesses and government agencies to build a more resilient and diverse regional economy.
Northland Inc says it will continue focusing on initiatives that support business growth, strengthen workforce capability and attract investment to ensure the long-term prosperity of Te Tai Tokerau.
