#international: Iran Names Mojtaba Khamenei as New Supreme Leader After Death of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei
Iran has named a new supreme leader following the killing of longtime leader Ali Khamenei in a strike carried out during the escalating conflict involving the United States and Israel.
Iranian state media reported that the country’s powerful clerical body, the Assembly of Experts, selected Mojtaba Khamenei – the son of the late leader – to succeed his father and take control of the Islamic Republic’s political and military leadership.
The announcement comes amid a rapidly intensifying war across the Middle East. Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was killed during a joint U.S.–Israel strike on leadership targets in Tehran, an attack that also reportedly killed several senior Iranian military officials and triggered a leadership crisis within the country.
Mojtaba Khamenei, a cleric who has long been seen as an influential figure within Iran’s political establishment, now assumes one of the most powerful roles in the country. The supreme leader has ultimate authority over Iran’s armed forces, foreign policy and key state institutions.
His appointment marks a significant moment in Iran’s modern history. Since the 1979 Islamic Revolution, only two people had previously held the position of supreme leader, making this transition one of the most consequential in decades.
Analysts say the selection of Mojtaba Khamenei signals continuity in Iran’s hardline political direction. The 56-year-old cleric is known to have strong connections with the country’s powerful military organisation, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, and has long been considered a likely successor despite never holding elected office.
The leadership change comes as the wider conflict continues to escalate. Strikes have targeted Iranian infrastructure including oil facilities in Tehran, while regional tensions have spread across parts of the Gulf and Lebanon.
International reaction has been swift. The United States and Israel have criticised the appointment while warning that Iran’s leadership transition could intensify the already volatile situation in the region.
Observers say the coming days will be critical as the new Iranian leader consolidates power while the conflict with the United States and Israel continues to unfold.
The war has already raised global concerns about energy supply disruptions, regional instability and the potential for a broader Middle East conflict.
