#international: Government Activates Consular Support for New Zealanders in the Middle East
The New Zealand Government says it is continuing to provide consular support to citizens in the Middle East as tensions in the region create uncertainty for travellers and expatriates.
Officials say the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MFAT) is closely monitoring developments and working to assist New Zealanders who may be affected by the evolving security situation.
Consular teams have been engaging with New Zealand citizens and residents in affected areas, providing guidance on safety, travel options and access to assistance where required. Authorities say the priority is ensuring that New Zealanders have up-to-date information and clear channels to request help if their situation changes.
The Government has also reminded New Zealanders in the region to register their details through the SafeTravel system. Officials say registration allows consular staff to contact citizens quickly during emergencies and provide advice about evacuation options, border closures or other developments that may affect travel.
MFAT has advised travellers to remain alert to local conditions, follow the guidance of local authorities and keep informed through official travel advisories.
Consular staff are also working with international partners and diplomatic networks to monitor travel routes and access points that may be used by New Zealanders attempting to leave the region.
The response comes as global tensions in parts of the Middle East continue to affect commercial travel, insurance coverage and access to safe transit routes. For some New Zealanders in the region, the rapidly changing security environment has complicated travel plans and created uncertainty about when and how they may return home.
The Government says consular assistance can include providing information and coordination support, helping New Zealanders connect with airlines or local authorities, and assisting in situations where individuals face immediate risk.
However, officials also emphasise that consular services cannot guarantee evacuation or cover travel costs, and that travellers are responsible for making their own arrangements where possible.
New Zealanders requiring urgent assistance have been encouraged to contact MFAT’s emergency consular services, which operate around the clock for citizens facing difficulties overseas.
As the situation in the Middle East continues to evolve, the Government says it will maintain close monitoring and continue working to ensure New Zealanders in the region have access to support and reliable information.
