#regional: Waiōeka Gorge Closed for Weekend as Heavy Rain Warning Issued
NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi has confirmed that State Highway 2 through the Waiōeka Gorge is now closed for the weekend, with the planned shutdown beginning Friday 13 February.
The gorge closed following the completion of escorted convoys earlier in the day and will remain shut through Saturday 14 February and Sunday 15 February.
The closure comes as MetService has issued an orange heavy rain warning covering the Bay of Plenty east of Ōpōtiki and Gisborne/Tairāwhiti north of Tolaga Bay. Forecasters are warning of significant rainfall that could trigger slips, falling debris and rapidly rising river levels.
Waka Kotahi says the decision to close the gorge is precautionary, aimed at protecting motorists from potential landslides and unstable terrain along the narrow and winding route.
The Waiōeka Gorge is a critical connection between the eastern Bay of Plenty and Tairāwhiti, frequently used by freight operators, local whānau and essential services. However, it is also highly vulnerable to severe weather events, with heavy rain often causing slips and road closures.
Motorists are being urged to delay travel or consider alternative routes where possible. Drivers are also reminded that conditions can change quickly during heavy rain, and that attempting to travel through closed or flood-affected roads puts both themselves and emergency responders at risk.
The Transport Agency will reassess the situation following the weekend weather event, with updates expected once conditions stabilise and safety inspections can be completed.
Waatea News will continue to provide updates as they come to hand.
