#hakinakina: Whānau Triathlon Series Returns to Get Horowhenua Moving
One of Horowhenua’s biggest and most anticipated whānau-focused sporting events is making a comeback this summer – the Let’s Move Together Whānau Triathlon Series is set to get tamariki, rangatahi and their whānau up, active and having fun across three action-packed days.
The “Let’s Move Together” series invites families from around Horowhenua to take part in a welcoming triathlon challenge, with each event featuring a run, cycle, and swim portion tailored to different age groups. Caregivers are encouraged to join in, making the series a true kōhanga of community spirit and physical wellbeing.
Three Days of Whānau-Friendly Sport
The triathlon series will take place across three locations and dates:
-
Friday 20 February 2026, 5 pm-7 pm – at Shannon School, Shannon
-
Sunday 22 February 2026, 10 am-2 pm – at Levin Aquatic Centre and Levin Domain
-
Sunday 1 March 2026, 10 am-2 pm – at Foxton Pools and Easton Park
Each day is structured to offer a fun, achievable challenge for whānau of all ages, with categories designed for ages 3–5, 6–7, 8–10 and 11 plus. Participants will run a short distance, ride a bike or scooter, and finish with a swim – perfect for first-time triathletes and budding competitors alike.
Entries are $2 for the Shannon event and $5 for the Levin and Foxton triathlons, with payment accepted on the day. Participants must bring a road-worthy bike or scooter and a correctly fitting helmet for the cycle leg.
Alongside the triathlon races, organisers are promising kai, goodie bags, and lots of fun activities – including a sausage sizzle – so whānau can stay, cheer and connect after each event.
Mayor Bernie Wanden says the series is about more than sport – it’s about encouraging healthy lifestyles and strengthening community ties. “This is a great way for tamariki and their whānau to get moving, get outdoors and enjoy time together,” she said in earlier media.
Registration is available online via the Aquatics Horowhenua website, and walk-up entries are possible on the day while spaces last. Safety is a priority, so organisers encourage early sign-ups to ensure participants secure their spot.
For whānau in Horowhenua, this return of the triathlon series offers an opportunity to get active, celebrate local spirit and create lasting summer memories together – one run, ride and swim at a time.
