#regional: Muaupoko Park to Reopen with Whakawātea Following Partnership Planning
Muaupoko Park in Ōtaki is set to reopen following extensive partnership planning between Ngāti Raukawa, Muaūpoko Tribal Authority and Kapiti Coast District Council, with a whakawātea ceremony marking the occasion.
The park, which holds deep cultural, historical and environmental significance for local iwi and the wider community, has been the focus of a collaborative effort to restore and enhance the space so it can be enjoyed by all while reflecting tikanga Māori values and local heritage.
A whakawātea – a Māori ceremonial opening and cleansing – is being held to formally reopen the park, acknowledging the work done to prepare the land and to set a positive tone as it returns to public use. The ceremony recognises not only physical restoration but also the spiritual and cultural wellbeing of the place. The reopening reflects the commitment of all parties to partnership planning and mana whenua leadership.
Local iwi leaders say the process demonstrates how collaboration between hapū, iwi and local government can lead to outcomes that honour cultural values and environmental stewardship, while enhancing community spaces for future generations. Councillors and community members have also been involved in shaping the park’s future, ensuring it meets both community needs and local Māori aspirations.
The project is seen as a positive example of co-governance and co-design in action – where voices from across the rohe have worked together to manage and celebrate taonga tuku iho, or treasures handed down through generations.
As Muaupoko Park reopens its gates, the community is invited to come together – to walk, kōrero, participate in activities and enjoy the natural beauty of the whenua in a space renewed through partnership and respect.
