#regional: Motorcyclist Dies in Fatal Crash on Southern Motorway Near Ōtara
A man has died after a serious crash on State Highway 1 near Ōtara in South Auckland, police say.
The incident unfolded late on Thursday night when a New Zealand Police motorways unit was conducting radar speed detection on the southbound lanes of the Southern Motorway. Around 11.15pm, officers detected a motorcycle travelling at high speed and signalled the rider to stop – but the motorcycle did not comply.
Police did not engage in a pursuit. After the unit stopped at the roadside and then continued south, the driver of an attenuator truck flagged them down to report a crash just north of the East Tamaki Road off-ramp. The motorcycle had collided with the rear of the truck.
Emergency responders attended the scene, but the male rider sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. Southbound lanes of State Highway 1 were fully closed for scene examination and traffic was diverted off the motorway. The lanes reopened shortly before 5am the following morning.
Police say formal identification procedures will be carried out, and support will be provided for the man’s next of kin. An investigation into the circumstances of the crash is underway, and as standard practice the Independent Police Conduct Authority will be notified.
Road trauma continues to be a significant issue in Auckland and across Aotearoa, especially on major state highways where speed and vehicle interactions are major risk factors. The crash will form part of broader safety analysis by transport and police agencies as they work to reduce fatal and serious injury collisions on high-speed routes.
