#regional: Two People Killed in Helicopter Crash near Paekākāriki Hill
Tragedy has struck the Wellington region this morning with the confirmed deaths of two people in a helicopter crash in the Paekākāriki Hill area.
Police were notified of the incident at about 7:30 a.m., after an automated crash alert was received. Emergency services, including Police, Fire and Emergency, Maritime NZ’s Rescue Coordination Centre, and helicopter crews attended the scene in steep terrain north of Wellington.
When crews reached the site, both the pilot and the sole passenger were found deceased. The wreckage was described by a nearby worker as “unrecognisable”, underlining the severity of the crash.
Police have established cordons around the crash area near the Battle Hill campground as investigations continue. Officers from the Civil Aviation Authority are working with Police on scene examination and the recovery of the victims.
A local resident who came upon the wreckage recounted chaotic conditions underfoot – steep scrub and difficult access – and described efforts to secure the site as emergency teams worked to make the area safer.
Local Member of Parliament Tim Costley expressed deep sadness at the news, extending thoughts and condolences to the families and friends of those killed. He also acknowledged that the crash may resonate painfully for some in the community, recalling past helicopter tragedies in the region.
Police say they will release further information once next of kin have been notified and initial site examinations are complete.
Radio Waatea extends its condolences to the families and whānau affected by this tragedy. We will continue to follow updates as they become available.
