#regional Ngāti Ranginui Iwi Expresses Deep Sympathy to Families of Those Lost at Mauao and in Papamoa
Ngāti Ranginui iwi leaders have issued a heartfelt message of sympathy and support for whānau and families affected by the devastating landslides at Mauao / Mount Maunganui and in Papamoa, which occurred during the severe North Island storms earlier this month.
In a statement released today, Ngāti Ranginui said they stand with those grieving the loss of loved ones and those enduring the pain of uncertainty. The iwi acknowledged the profound sorrow and disruption the events have brought to local whānau, visitors and the wider Bay of Plenty community. While the full text of the statement is currently held on Scoop News, the sentiment reflects a deep expression of aroha and solidarity with those experiencing loss and hardship.
As one of the tangata whenua of Tauranga Moana, Ngāti Ranginui has a long and enduring relationship with Mauao – a sacred maunga and cultural taonga that sits at the heart of their ancestral rohe. Along with neighbouring iwi Ngāi Te Rangi and Ngāti Pūkenga, Ngāti Ranginui jointly administers the maunga through the Mauao Trust, recognising its spiritual and historical significance.
The recent landslide at Mauao, triggered by intense rainfall from the January 2026 storms, resulted in multiple fatalities and prompted a large-scale emergency response before the operation shifted from rescue to recovery. Another tragic slide in nearby Papamoa also claimed lives, intensifying the sense of collective loss across the community.
In their message, Ngāti Ranginui leaders emphasised manaakitanga and support for affected whānau, encouraging all those grieving to lean on community networks, marae, and cultural support systems during this time of mourning. Their expression of sympathy reflects the profound Māori values of whānau, care and shared responsibility in times of tragedy.
Radio Waatea will continue to share updates and statements from local iwi and community groups as the recovery efforts continue and support for whānau affected by these tragic events grows.
