Northland Floods: Heavy Rains and Flooding Hit Northland — Civil Defence on High Alert
Northland communities are once again facing severe weather impacts, as bands of heavy rain, strong winds and floodwaters continue to affect the region.
A powerful storm system that has been tracking over the upper North Island is bringing sustained downpours and gales, prompting civil defence and emergency agencies to heighten their readiness. Weather services say there’s a high chance of red warnings being issued as heavy rainfall pushes south, following days of flooding and storm damage in Northland and other parts of the country.
Earlier in the week, intense rain led to isolated communities, washed-out roads and rising waters across the Far North. Some areas were particularly hard hit, with rivers and streams swelling rapidly after prolonged downpours. Emergency services urged residents in low-lying and flood-prone zones to stay vigilant, especially around waterways that can rise with little warning.
Civil Defence Northland has been actively sharing updates, rainfall data and safety information as conditions remain dangerous. Authorities continue to remind people to monitor official forecasts, heed warnings, and follow safety guidance.
Drivers and residents are also being urged to avoid unnecessary travel, plan alternative routes where flooding has compromised highways, and keep clear of floodwaters and debris on roads. With the storm system expected to linger and potentially strengthen, emergency teams are preparing for further impacts through today and into the coming days.
We will continue to bring you updates as the situation develops. Stay safe, and stay tuned to Radio Waatea for the latest information.
