#regional FRUIT FLY RESPONSE CONTINUES IN MT ROSKILL
Biosecurity New Zealand says its response continues after the detection of a single male Queensland fruit fly in a surveillance trap in the Auckland suburb of Mt Roskill. The find was made as part of the national pest surveillance programme and has triggered a full response operation in the area.
Officials confirm there has been no further sign of the pest so far, but protocols are in place to prevent any potential spread. Teams are boosting trapping and inspection efforts around the original detection site, with daily trap checks within a 200-metre zone and checks every three days out to 1,500 metres.
To protect local gardens, fruit trees and New Zealand’s valuable horticulture industry, legal controls have been put in place restricting the movement of fresh fruit and vegetables out of the controlled area. In the closest zone – covering around 262 properties – residents are asked not to take whole fruit or vegetables out of the zone at all. In a wider zone covering more than 8,300 properties, produce grown there cannot be moved out of the area.
Biosecurity New Zealand Commissioner North Mike Inglis says signage has been erected and designated disposal bins placed in the area to support residents and businesses with the restrictions. Field officers are also in the community providing information and support.
While the Queensland fruit fly does not pose a risk to human health, it can cause serious harm to fruit and vegetable crops and has the potential to impact export markets if it became established here. New Zealand has successfully eliminated previous incursions thanks to swift action and community cooperation, and officials are urging local residents to help prevent any possible spread this time as well.
If you live in or near Mt Roskill and spot anything unusual on fruit or plants, you’re asked to report it through Biosecurity New Zealand’s channels and follow all movement controls until authorities confirm it’s safe to resume normal activity.
