#whanau: Kiwi Parents Still Love the Classics — Top Baby Names for 2025 Announced
New figures released this week show that Kiwi parents are once again choosing time-honoured favourites for their newborns, with Noah and Isla topping the most popular baby name lists for 2025.
According to the latest data from the Department of Internal Affairs, Noah remains the nation’s favourite name for baby boys for the third year in a row, with 244 registrations recorded. Following closely behind was Luca, chosen by 236 families.
On the girls’ side, Isla was the clear favourite with 179 registrations, cementing its place in the top three names since 2016. Close behind was Charlotte, given to 178 newborn girls this year.
Minister of Internal Affairs Brooke van Velden says the enduring popularity of classic names highlights how Kiwi naming trends balance tradition with individuality. With over 58,000 births registered in 2025 and more than 19,400 unique first names recorded, the data gives a fascinating snapshot of how Aotearoa families choose names that feel both meaningful and timeless.
“Whether parents are influenced by family history, cultural significance, or simply the sound of a name, these choices reflect the diversity and values of our communities,” Ms van Velden said.
The 2025 rankings follow a long trend of Kiwi parents favouring classic names that travel well across generations and cultures.
