#regional Homicide Inquiry Underway After Man Fatally Shot in South Auckland
Police have launched a homicide investigation after a man died following a shooting incident in South Auckland on Thursday afternoon.
Emergency services were called to the Clendon Park Medical Centre after the man presented with gunshot injuries and was taken to Middlemore Hospital. Despite the efforts of medical staff, he later succumbed to his wounds, police confirmed.
Detectives from the Counties Manukau Criminal Investigation Branch say the man was shot elsewhere before arriving at the medical centre, and inquiries are now focused on understanding the circumstances leading up to the shooting.
Detective Senior Sergeant Malcolm Hassall says officers are speaking with several people as part of their enquiries and are continuing to piece together the events that unfolded in the Wattle Downs area. A scene examination is underway at a nearby address on Gambare Place.
Police have urged anyone who saw suspicious activity in the area on Thursday afternoon to contact them via the 105 phone service with the event number 241205/5771. Information can also be given anonymously through Crime Stoppers on 0800 555 111.
There have been no arrests so far, but officers say there will be an increased police presence in the neighbourhood as they continue their investigation.
Neighbours who witnessed the police response described seeing specialist units and forensic teams at the scene, with some saying the incident has left families feeling unsettled.
This incident adds to ongoing concerns about violent crime in parts of Auckland, with community leaders and residents hoping police work will lead to answers and justice for the victim and his whānau.
Police continue to work to establish exactly what happened and who might be responsible, and are asking anyone with information to come forward.
