Your New Year’s Eve 2025 Guide Across Aotearoa
Tēnā koutou katoa. As Wednesday, 31 December draws closer, whānau all over Aotearoa are making plans to welcome 2026 together. Whether you’re after free community events, family-friendly gatherings, or live music and fireworks, there’s something for everyone – across the motu. It all comes with a caveat – the weather – so be on the look out for cancellations.
Tāmaki Makaurau / Auckland
The Auckland city centre promises one of the country’s most iconic New Year celebrations. The Sky Tower fireworks display at midnight will light up the harbour skyline, and the Vector Lights on the Auckland Harbour Bridge will create an unforgettable visual spectacle. Crowds will gather from early evening along the waterfront – from Wynyard Quarter to the Viaduct Harbour – with plenty of great vantage points across the city, including many of our maunga. Public transport and travel plans are strongly encouraged as roads get busy.
For those after nightlife, Auckland’s bars, rooftops and venues are hosting NYE parties, from waterfront DJ sets at Saint Alice and rooftop vibes at HI-SO, to stylish countdown dinners and celebrations at local pubs and nightspots.
Pōneke / Wellington
In Pōneke, the waterfront at Whairepo Lagoon will host a free council-run NYE party with food, entertainment and fireworks at 9.30pm, followed by a midnight countdown that brings the year in with energy and spirit. Courtenay Place also transforms into a New Year’s Carnival with live music, DJs and outdoor dining for those who want a little extra celebration.
Christchurch
In Ōtautahi / Christchurch, NYE25 is back in North Hagley Park with free live performances from local acts and a big midnight fireworks finish – a smoke-free and family-friendly celebration designed for people of all ages. Entry is free, and early festivities like a kids’ countdown mean tamariki can join the fun too.
Tauranga & Bay of Plenty
Traditionally one of the happiest family-friendly celebrations in the region, Tauranga’s community New Year’s Eve events were planned across different neighbourhoods – from the waterfront to Blake Park and Fergusson Park – with live entertainment, activities and fireworks. However, due to adverse weather forecasts, the city council has regrettably cancelled the organised events this year. Plans are still underway for fireworks (weather permitting) later in the evening, so whānau are advised to stay updated if skies clear.
Other Places Around Aotearoa
- Smaller cities like Rotorua and Dunedin often have relaxed community gatherings, restaurant dinners and local bars open late – perfect if you prefer a quieter or more intimate NYE with whānau and friends.
- Raglan also has ticketed celebrations with live music at community venues if you want to welcome the New Year with big island-style vibes.
Wherever you choose to welcome 2026, plan ahead – spaces and transport can get busy in city centres, and weather can shift. Many public events have alcohol-free and family-friendly zones, and early-evening fireworks or countdowns make it easier for tamariki to join the fun too.
Ka tau te rangimārie ki a tātou katoa. From all of us at Radio Waatea, have a safe, joyful and meaningful New Year’s Eve – may 2026 bring well-being, unity and prosperity to our whānau and communities.
