Storm Safety & Road Alerts Across Aotearoa
As many whānau are still on the road after the long holiday weekend, heavy weather is once again a concern for drivers and communities right across the motu.
MetService and NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi are urging all drivers to be extra cautious on the roads today. Severe thunderstorm watches and warnings remain in place for parts of both the South and North Islands. These storm systems are bringing thunder, very heavy rain, large hail and frequent lightning, which can make driving conditions dangerous – especially on rural state highways and alpine passes.
Reports have already come in of weather-related hazards, including hail temporarily blocking the road on State Highway 8 between Timaru and Fairlie, and cars stranded in floodwater in low-lying areas. Road crews are out working to clear debris and restore safe travel where they can.
The thunderstorms are part of an unstable weather pattern affecting much of the country. In the South Island, areas from Christchurch south through Otago and Southland are at risk of severe storms that could produce hail larger than 20 millimetres – big enough to damage vehicles, crops and make surfaces slippery underfoot.
Up north, a moist and unstable air mass is expected to bring intense downpours and flash flooding to parts of the upper North Island later this afternoon and evening. Heavy rain rates of 25 to 40 millimetres per hour could overwhelm drains and reduce visibility on open roads.
Safety reminders for listeners today:
-
Slow down and drive to the conditions – spray and surface water can make stopping distances much longer.
-
Watch for hail, which can make roads treacherous and damage windscreens.
-
Stay updated with the latest warnings from MetService and follow any local road closures or detours.
Our thoughts are with everyone travelling or working outdoors today. Take extra care out there and keep safe on all our roads – especially if you’re heading home after the summer break.
