Māori Health Leaders Urge Whānau to Prioritise Wellbeing Over Summer
Māori health providers are urging whānau to take care of their physical and mental wellbeing over the summer holidays, a time when stress, isolation and health risks can increase.
Health experts say incidents related to alcohol harm, mental distress and untreated medical conditions often rise during the festive period, particularly among Māori men and rangatahi.
Providers are encouraging whānau to check in on one another, reduce risky behaviours, and seek support early. Many kaupapa Māori services will continue operating through summer, offering culturally safe health and wellbeing support.
“Manaakitanga starts at home,” one provider said. “Looking after each other is how we get through.”
