#update: Second Arrest Made in Mt Wellington Homicide — Police Press On
Police have confirmed they have made a second arrest in the investigation into the fatal stabbing in Mt Wellington on December 5, as the community waits for further answers.
The tragedy began just before midday on Friday, when the victim – reportedly riding a motorcycle – became involved in an altercation with the occupants of a hatchback on a residential street, Harris Road. The victim was stabbed during the confrontation.
Despite leaving the scene, the injured man sought medical help at a medical centre on Lunn Avenue around 12:15 pm. He was rushed to hospital but tragically died later that afternoon.
-
After the stabbing, the vehicle believed to have been involved – a blue hatchback – was located in nearby Ellerslie, on Laud Avenue, prompting a second crime scene.
-
Forensic teams have thoroughly examined both scenes: Harris Road – where the attack occurred – and the location in Ellerslie. Police are now pursuing all leads, including CCTV and civilian dash-cam footage.
-
Police say the arrest is not the end of their inquiries; they are working to identify and charge anyone else involved. Community members with information – even seemingly minor clues – are being urged to come forward.
A 21-year-old man has now been charged with murder and is set to appear in the Auckland District Court in the coming days.
The fatal stabbing – which occurred in broad daylight, on a quiet suburban street – has shaken many in Mt Wellington and the surrounding communities. Police have increased their presence in the area as neighbours, local businesses, and whānau seek reassurance and answers.
For many, the incident raises deeper concerns about safety, violence, and the trauma left behind when a life is lost so unexpectedly.
Authorities emphasise that any piece of information could be crucial:
-
Did you see anything unusual on Harris Road or Laud Avenue around midday last Friday?
-
Do you have CCTV or dash-cam footage covering those roads at that time?
-
Even if you think what you saw is insignificant – Police would rather you call than stay silent.
