#hakinakina Historic Double for Aotearoa
Both the All Blacks Sevens (men) and Black Ferns Sevens (women) secured major wins at the 2025 HSBC SVNS Dubai tournament, overcoming their trans-Tasman rivals Australia Women’s Sevens to claim titles in the desert.
The women’s side ended Australia’s dominance of the event with a clinical performance.
The men also showed their class, getting off to a strong start in the tournament and advancing with momentum.
In the women’s final, New Zealand applied relentless pressure and capitalised on Australia’s handling errors and offloading miscues. The Black Ferns Sevens took command early:
-
A try by Stacy Waaka set the tone.
-
A swift transition try to Kelsey Teneti extended their advantage.
-
By half-time, it was 17-0 in favour of New Zealand.
-
Early in the second half, Risi Pouri‑Lane added another, making it 22-0.
-
Australia scored late in the game but the margin (29-14) already told the story of the Black Ferns’ dominance.
The All Blacks Sevens got their tournament off with a win over Great Britain, finishing strong with a 21-14 result. The team showed discipline, tempo and control – key ingredients in the sevens format.
These victories are more than just tournament titles for New Zealand rugby: They reinforce Aotearoa’s strength in sevens rugby, across both men’s and women’s codes. For the Black Ferns Sevens, ending Australia’s run in Dubai is a big psychological boost. Their win reflects not just skill but mental toughness and execution under pressure. The men’s win helps set the tone for the 2025-26 season of the HSBC SVNS, building momentum early. Both teams’ success plays into national pride and gives younger players aspirational targets: this is rugby for the generations.
