#indigenous #global: First Nations Push for Greater Role in Environmental Policy
Ottawa, Canada
First Nations leaders across Canada reaffirmed calls today for stronger Indigenous authority in environmental decision-making as federal and provincial governments update climate and land-use frameworks.
Indigenous organisations say current consultation mechanisms remain inconsistent and often symbolic. Many nations want co-management of forests, rivers, and wildlife – particularly in areas threatened by mining and industrial expansion.
Leaders emphasised that Indigenous stewardship models offer long-term sustainability grounded in millennia of land knowledge.
“Climate policy without Indigenous leadership is incomplete,” one representative said.
