Te Tai Tonga Electorate Calls for Te Pāti Māori President to Resign
Te Pāti Māori’s Te Tai Tonga Electorate Executive has launched a petition calling for the resignation of party president John Tamihere.
The petition, calls for leadership grounded in tikanga Māori, integrity, and collective accountability:
The petition reads as follows:
Kia ora,
We, the undersigned, guided by tikanga Māori and bound by our collective commitment to integrity, accountability, and truth, hereby call for the immediate resignation of the Te Pāti Māori President.
Leadership within Te Ao Māori is a sacred responsibility, one that must be exercised with tika, pono, and aroha. When that trust is diminished, it is the duty of the collective to restore balance and uphold the mana of the kaupapa.
We believe that the President has not acted in good faith or in the spirit of aroha, pono and tika in the execution of their duties and responsibilities that the role of Party President is afforded.
Te Pāti Māori belongs to the people and it is here and now that the people, call for the mana of the movement to be restored.
We call for the President to vacate the position without delay, so that the mana of Te Pāti Māori may be restored, and the voice of our people remain steadfast, united, and grounded in truth.
Ngā mihi nui.
At a recent National Council hui members voted to suspend Te Tai Tokerau MP Mariameno Kapa-Kingi for breaching the party’s kawa (constitution), and to reset her electorate committee.
The petition accuses Tamihere of failing to act in good faith and calls for him to vacate the role immediately to restore the mana of Te Pāti Māori.
Meanwhile, the National Iwi Chairs Forum has requested a hui with Te Pāti Māori leadership in Wellington to address the party’s internal challenges.
Forum spokesperson Bayden Barber says the goal is to ensure Māori voices remain strong and united, regardless of political divisions.
