National Māori Energy Summit Opens in Ngāmotu, Calls for Māori Leadership in Sector
Aotearoa’s first National Māori Energy Summit starts today in Ngāmotu, bringing together iwi, Māori enterprises, government, and industry leaders to shape the country’s energy future.
The summit aims to boost Māori participation in emerging energy sectors and ensure their voices are central to decision-making.
Jamie Tuuta, chair of Pou Tahua, the economic arm of the Iwi Chairs Forum, says the summit is a chance for Māori to move from being energy consumers to leaders and investors.
“Fundamentally, to raise awareness of the current energy system in Aotearoa, which is as we all know, under strain, and to look at opportunities for greater Māori and iwi participation and decision making across the energy system as a whole,” says Tuuta.
He says stronger Māori representation is at the heart of the discussions.
“We want to be producers, we want to be investors, and we want to be decision makers… providing opportunities for Māori to lead is a positive thing, because we don’t lead just for Māori, but we lead for the country,” says Tuuta.
The summit continues tomorrow, with hopes for concrete action and greater Māori influence in New Zealand’s energy landscape.
