Government signals pullback on tikanga Māori in courts

Justice Minister Paul Goldsmith warned legal professionals that “unique” court rulings recognising tikanga Māori might deter investment, and said his government is “absolutely prepared” to legislate over court decisions if necessary.

This has sparked concern among Māori legal scholars and advocates about the undermining of customary law and Māori rights within the justice system.
