Global water conference puts Māori voices at the centre
Aotearoa is set to host its largest-ever international water conference next week, bringing together over 1,400 delegates from nearly 50 countries.
Jointly organised by the International Water Association and Water New Zealand, the event will spotlight indigenous voices and innovative solutions for water sustainability.
The conference theme, Empowering Tomorrow: Smart Water Solutions for Resilient Communities, places Māori and other indigenous perspectives at the centre of global water discussions.
Solstice Morrison, Māori Strategy Lead at Aurecon, says the event is about more than just technology.
“I think what’s most powerful about this event is the fact that indigenous voices, both here in Aotearoa, our Māori voices and around the globe are put at the center rather than the periphery,” says Morrison.
International experts will share approaches to water management, climate resilience, and governance, with a special focus on nature-based solutions and the interconnectedness of water, land, and people.
“The three main kaupapa for the indigenous communities workshop are focused around kaitiakitanga – how we here in Aotearoa can be or are stewards of our waterways and abroad, resilience, and also governance. How can we shape models to best empower both the indigenous communities here in Aotearoa and abroad?” says Morrison.
The conference will be held in Christchurch from 29 September to 3 October.
