What next for Dame Noeline Taurua?
In a surprising move, Netball New Zealand has stood down Dame Noeline Taurua as head coach of the Silver Ferns for the upcoming Taini Jamison Trophy series against South Africa. The decision, announced on September 10, 2025, comes after months of unresolved issues between Taurua and the playing group.
Netball New Zealand cited “proposed changes to the Silver Ferns High Performance programme and environment” as the primary reason for the stand down. Despite ongoing discussions, the parties were unable to reach a satisfactory resolution in time for the series, leading to the decision to appoint interim coach Yvette McCausland-Durie.
Taurua, who has been with the Silver Ferns since 2018, was not informed of the specific concerns raised by players that led to the stand down. This lack of communication has added to the controversy surrounding the decision.
The move has sparked widespread criticism from former players and netball experts. Laura Langman, a former Silver Ferns captain, described the decision as “the saddest day in New Zealand’s proud netball history,” expressing her devastation and bewilderment.
Former Silver Ferns coach Yvonne Willering also expressed her disappointment, stating that the decision was a “gutless and selfish” act that undermines the integrity of the sport.
Yvette McCausland-Durie, head coach of the Central Pulse, has been appointed as interim coach for the Taini Jamison Trophy series. She was reportedly informed of her new role just hours before the public announcement. Netball New Zealand has emphasized the need to focus on supporting the players for the immediate challenge of playing South Africa. Discussions regarding the future of the Silver Ferns coaching staff are ongoing.
