Kaipara beyond reach with 80% votes in Tāmaki Makaurau
As at 0820pm: The Tāmaki Makaurau by-election result is beyond doubt – Oriini Kaipara of Te Pāti Māori has secured victory. With 79.7 percent of votes counted, Kaipara has 5,059 ballots, well ahead of Labour’s Peeni Henare on 2,586. The margin of 2,473 cannot be overturned, with only about 2,000 votes left to be counted.
Kaipara’s campaign, built on te reo, tikanga, and tino rangatiratanga, struck a deep chord with urban Māori communities in South and West Auckland. A former broadcaster, her national profile and unapologetic voice will now shift into Parliament, amplifying issues such as housing, cost of living, and cultural survival.
Henare, while retaining significant support, especially among voters valuing his parliamentary experience, could not withstand the surge of support for a new generation of Māori leadership.
For Tāmaki Makaurau, the outcome is historic: Oriini Kaipara will take her place in Parliament with a decisive mandate, reflecting Māori resilience and confidence in kaupapa Māori representation.
