Right to Repair Bill Stalls Despite Overwhelming Public Support
The Green Party’s Right to Repair bill, championed by co-leader Marama Davidson, is facing a setback after government members voted against advancing it.
The bill would require manufacturers to provide repair information and spare parts for products over $100, making it easier and more affordable for New Zealanders to fix household items rather than replace them.
Davidson says the bill had strong public support, with 95% of submissions in favour.
“We urge people who can see the value of just being able to have information and spare parts available to you so that you can fix your dishwasher when that small little thing broke, instead of having to get a whole brand new one. So we’re going to keep pressuring and supporting government members to actually see you’ve got a mandate to do this,” says Davidson.
Despite the setback, Davidson is urging the public to contact their local MPs and show their support.
