Waikato prison riot contained
A riot at Waikato’s Spring Hill prison has been contained. A tense situation unfolded this afternoon at Spring Hill Corrections Facility when a group of inmates rioted in the exercise yard. The incident began at approximately 3:30 pm, when eleven prisoners refused to leave the yard, igniting several small fires and causing damage to prison property.
The incident triggered a robust response from a multi-agency task force. Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ), Hato Hone St John, NZ Police, and a Corrections Advanced Control & Restraint team with specialist capability were deployed to the scene.
Fire services initially arrived with two trucks and a water tanker, soon followed by reinforcement that included four fire trucks, a ladder truck, two water tankers, and a command unit.
