John Minto | the tide is turning against Israel
Since the end of June, at least 1,891 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza, including 294 who died while trying to collect humanitarian aid. Meanwhile, Israeli forces have conducted intensified operations in Deir al‑Balah, alongside evacuation orders that have caused repeated internal displacement. An estimated more than 60,000 have died. Israeli warplanes struck areas near aid distribution sites, killing aid-seekers; the Gaza Health Ministry reports 743 Palestinians were killed at Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) sites since late May.
A coalition of 25 countries, including New Zealand, France, and Canada, issued a joint call for an immediate ceasefire, denouncing escalating civilian suffering and demanding release of Israeli hostages. Arab nations including Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Egypt have formally urged Hamas to disarm and step down, transferring governance in Gaza to the Palestinian Authority under UN-backed oversight. The Hague Group Bogotá Summit (July 15–16) produced a six-point action plan including arms embargoes to Israel and support for international justice measures for alleged war crimes. The UK announced it will recognise Palestine at the UN General Assembly in September 2025 unless Israel meets ceasefire and humanitarian conditions, joining France in similar steps.
The death toll in Gaza has now surpassed 60,000 Palestinians, with over 18,000 children fatalities, amidst reports of acute famine-like conditions. UN-backed agencies warn two out of three famine conditions are now met. Severe malnutrition afflicts nearly 100,000 women and children, with 14 child deaths in 24 hours reported by Gaza’s Health Ministry. Aid shortages and rising prices—driven by Israeli blockade since March—are devastating conditions.
Living conditions in shelters are dire: overcrowding, lack of sanitation, insufficient food or water, and rising gender-based violence and exploitation risks, especially among women and girls. WHO staff facilities were struck, staff detained, and evacuations enforced, severely hindering humanitarian operations and destabilising Gaza’s already collapsing healthcare infrastructure.
