Matatini makes the shift to Tainui
In a landmark decision, Te Matatini has officially selected Hopuhopu, located in Taupiri near Ngāruawāhia, Waikato, as the venue for Tākiri Tū Te Matatini 2027. This marks a return to Tainui land since the festival was last hosted here in 2000. Originally slated for Te Tauihu (Nelson region), Te Matatini was later pulled from the area due to escalating logistical concerns tied to the event’s rapid growth—issues around accommodation, transport, and freight were pivotal factors. The Te Matatini Society Chair, Tā Herewini Parata, emphasised that as the festival has expanded, so too must the host regions’ capacity to support its scale.
Following a two-day tono (bid) process, a collaborative proposal by Te Whare Haka o Tainui and Waikato-Tainui iwi received unanimous endorsement from the Te Matatini National Board. Here’s why it stood out:
-
Kotahitanga-centred values: The proposal exemplified Kingitanga principles and unity, resonating deeply with Te Matatini’s ethos.
-
Tainui rangatira in action: Waikato-Tainui executive chair Tukoroirangi Morgan affirmed the iwi’s resolve to marshal all resources necessary for a successful event.
-
Mana Motuhake emphasis: Delegates like Tony Walker noted the opportunity to demonstrate the strength and independence of regional Māori leadership
