Auckland Museum Māori & Pacific Galleries Remain Closed

The physical Māori and Pacific galleries at the Auckland War Memorial Museum are expected to stay shut until 2029 due to underlying asbestos complications discovered in May. Their reopening is now tied to the museum’s centenary redevelopment, also slated through 2029

Director David Reeves highlighted the complex heritage architecture, noting that the closure impacts not just safety, but also the visibility of Taonga Māori, Pacific taonga, and pūrākau (stories) in a significant cultural institution.
