Cabinet ignores Waitangi Tribunal
The Regulatory Standards Bill is a proposed piece of legislation in New Zealand aimed at enhancing the quality and transparency of the country’s regulatory framework. Spearheaded by Regulation Minister David Seymour and forming part of the ACT Party’s coalition agreement with the National Party, the bill seeks to establish clear principles for responsible regulation and introduce mechanisms for assessing and improving existing laws. It has courted huge controversy in Te Ao Maori. Now, the Bill, is being introduced to Parliament even though the Waitangi Tribunal recommended halting it. The Tribunal intervened with an urgent hearing after 18,000 claimants registered their support for an urgent Waitangi Tribunal claim – Cabinet ignored the recommendation and agreed for the Bill to proceed.
“This is constitutional sabotage” said Te Pāti Māori co-leader Rawiri Waititi.
“The Regulatory Standards Bill is a Trojan Horse that will erase the mana of Te Tiriti from all current and future laws. It will give the Minister for Regulations, David Seymour, more power than the Prime Minster & Parliament” Waititi said.
More to come
