Hākinakina Weekend of Sport
Hākinakina Weekend of Sport
What a weekend its been with the Warriors won 16 / 12 over the Dolphins – bit touch and go but they pulled it off! As a tragic sports fiend it was great to see Moana Pacific win over the Auckland Blues although, I could hear Willie Jackson screaming with delight when they came up victorious with a 27 – 21 win. Crystal Palace have stunned Manchester City to win the FA Cup – the first time in 120 years I think – literally no one alive since the last win! It was thrilling to watch. I reckon Liam Lawson still wont get a run even though Yuki Tsunoda crashed out. The only thing missing from the sports wrap is a little bit of cricket – but that’s because of the outbreak in hostilities between India and Pakistan.
Auckland United secured back-to-back OFC Women’s Champions League titles with a 1–0 victory over Papua New Guinea’s Hekari United in the final held at Stade Pater in Pirae. Midfielder Danielle Canham scored the decisive goal in the 26th minute, and the team maintained their lead despite Hekari’s persistent efforts in the second half.
In the men’s A-League semi-final first leg, Auckland FC achieved a historic 1–0 away win against Melbourne Victory. Logan Rogerson netted the only goal in the 64th minute, positioning Auckland FC as strong contenders to become the first New Zealand team to reach the A-League Grand Final.
The Wellington Phoenix are set to host a significant semi-final match at Sky Stadium. Following a record-breaking regular season, the team is poised for one of the most crucial games in club history.
The New Zealand women’s rugby team, the Black Ferns, played to a thrilling 24–24 draw against Canada in the Pacific Four Series. Canada took the lead in the 77th minute, but the Black Ferns responded with a try in extra time to level the match.
The Sal’s National Basketball League featured several matches over the weekend. Detailed results and statistics are available on the official NZNBL website.
In harness racing, notable performances included Beach Day securing a win in Race 6, finishing with a time of 2:25.90.
Hawera Racecourse hosted several races on Sunday, May 18. Complete race results and details can be found on the Racing and Sports website.
The Bay Ford CXHB 2025 cyclocross event took place in Fernhill, featuring competitive races across various categories.
