As New Zealand marks New Zealand Sign Language Week, the Māori Deaf community highlights achievements and ongoing issues.
Since its recognition in 2008, NZSL has served as the primary language for approximately 4,600 Deaf New Zealanders, with an additional 23,000 using it.
Tere of Waikato, “NZSL is vital to us. It’s part of our culture.”
She shares the language on platforms like TikTok and Instagram to inspire others.
However, she also notes the discrimination experienced by Māori Deaf individuals, who face challenges from both ableism and racism.
