Māori Art Pioneer Fred Graham Dies at 97
Fred Graham, regarded as a tohunga and a trailblazer in contemporary Māori art, has passed away at the age of 97. Graham, of Ngāti Koroki Kahukura, Tainui, was recently appointed Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit for his contributions to Māori arts. His pioneering efforts include organising one of the first exhibitions of modern Māori painting and sculpture in Hamilton in 1966. Graham represented New Zealand at numerous international exhibitions, including the Venice Biennale and Te Ao Marama/Seven Māori Artists in Australia. He dedicated his life to mentoring young artists and creating sculptures displayed globally. Graham’s legacy continues, to inspire future generations of Māori artists. Aotearoa and te ao Māori mourn the loss of a visionary artist and mentor. Moe mai rā e te rangatira.
