New Leadership for Taranaki Maunga Management
In a landmark move for Indigenous governance, Wharehoka Wano has been appointed to lead a new body comprising eight iwi to oversee the management of Taranaki Maunga.
Effective today, iwi will now have an equal say alongside the Crown in managing what was formerly known as Egmont National Park, now designated as Te Papa-Kura-o-Taranaki. The arrangement under the Taranaki Maunga Collective Redress Act requires iwi approval for future management plans.
Wano, praised for his diplomatic skills, will navigate complex relationships as he leads efforts to ensure the cultural and environmental stewardship of the ancestral mountains, which Parliament recognised as tupuna maunga earlier this year.
