From a Double Garage to Nationwide Success: The Journey of Te Wānanga o Aotearoa
This week, Te Wānanga o Aotearoa celebrates its remarkable 40-year journey, which began in a humble double garage in Te Awamutu.
Founded in 1985 by Dr. Rongo Wetere and Boy Mangu, the institution was established in response to the educational challenges faced by young Māori students.
Chief Executive Evie O’Brien says the Wānanga started with just 18 students and has evolved into a thriving network serving nearly a million tauira.
In 1993, it was recognised as a tertiary institution. Te Wānanga now boasts over 80 campuses nationwide, offering a variety of programs in te reo Māori, education, social work, and business.
