Māori Housing Providers Left in Limbo as Major Funds Go to Bigger Players
Some Māori and community housing providers say they’ve been left in limbo after most new social housing funding went to just five organisations.
Of the 1500 new places announced last year, 1000 went to ‘strategic partners’ — leaving others without the rent subsidy needed to unlock finance and start building.
Te Matapihi head Ali Hamlin-Paenga says some providers have land and consents ready, but stalled developments and rising costs are putting pressure on whānau.
She’s calling for more support for Māori providers, saying the current model favours larger players.
The Ministry says there’s still “some room” for other projects, but providers want more transparency and access.
