Maniapoto Opened Lands for Railway, Boosting New Zealand’s Development
This week marks 140 years since Ngāti Maniapoto allowed the North Island Main Trunk Railway, known as Te Ara o Tūrongo, to pass through their lands between Te Awamutu and Taumarunui—a pivotal moment in New Zealand’s history.

On April 15th, 1885, Premier Robert Stout and Rangatira Wahanui Hautare attended the first sod ceremony near Haereawatea. This event followed the Ō-Rākau battle in 1864 and led to the railway’s completion in 1908, connecting Wellington and Auckland.
The railway significantly boosted New Zealand’s economic development. On April 15th, 2023, a re-enactment celebrated 140 years of Te Ara o Tūrongo.
